Choosing an exercise provider
- For your own safety, ensure it is registered with REPs
- Look for a facility / exercise provider that offers the type and range of activities that suit your needs – that could mean having enough options so as you progress you have alternatives, or maybe you want a more specialist offering and only have one activity, but want the provider to be an expert in this.
- Look for options that are close to your work and / or home – the key is what is convenient for you?
- We recommend you pay for your membership weekly / monthly. This is both easier to budget for, and also ensures you are better protected under consumer law.
- Above all, find a facility you feel comfortable in – go in, take a look around and get the feel of the place and ensure it’s right for you.
Ministry of health
On the Ministry of Health website they suggest some basics around ‘Going to the Gym’ and using trainers & teachers that are registered with REPs. We provided the MOH with industry knowledge and helped the development of the MOH recommendations which provide the general public with the necessary valuable information to digest before considering getting into exercise. Complaints process
If you wish to make a complaint about an exercise facility or an exercise professional then we recommend that the first step is to contact the facility or person concerned directly. If they do not reply, you are not satisfied with their reply or contacting them is not appropriate, and they are a member of EXNZ or registered with REPs then you can lay a formal complaint with us or REPs.
In New Zealand we have a number of regulatory bodies that should be your first port of call if the issue is within their coverage:
- Privacy Commissioner (Privacy issues)
- Human Rights Commission (Human rights issues)
- Commerce Commission (legal / contract matters)
- NZ Police (for criminal matters)
- WorkSafeNZ (health & safety)
